Lakers win 2004 Spring League title

The #1-seeded Lakers beat the #2-seeded Heat 84-76 tonight in the championship final of the Huskie Men's Basketball Spring League. The Lakers led 45-40 at the half. Dustin Fruson led the Lakers with 25 points, and hit five three-pointers. Huskie guard Rob Lovelace added 17 for the victors.

Huskie forward Andrew Spagrud led the Heat with 38 points, while Adam Patola contributed 15. The Lakers and Heat both had 8-2 records in the regular season of the eight team league, finishing first and second respectively in the standings. The Lakers beat the Heat 79-75 in their only regular season meeting.


The University of Saskatchewan Huskie's Men's Basketball team's annual Spring League begina play at the beginning of May. This year the league is expanding to eight teams because of the increase in demand and gym availability at the new Physical Activity Complex.

What: The University of Saskatchewan Huskies Men's Basketball annual Spring League. The goal of the league is to create a highly competitive basketball environment for players who want to be exposed to the highest level of competition. Each team is guaranteed 12 games during the seven week league. Teams will play 10 regular season games, and then have an eight team playoff.

Who: The league is open to current and former university, college, senior men's league and senior team high school players.

When: Monday and Wednesday nights (6:30 & 7:45 pm), May 3rd - June 16th.

Where: Brand new Physical Activity Complex, campus of the University of Saskatchewan.

Cost: $70 - Cash or cheque (payable to Huskie Men's Basketball). Must be paid by first week.

Deadline: Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 27th, 4:30 pm. Teams will be posted by April 29th.

Rules - CIS game rules apply, except for the following modifications:

- Players must wear their team's jersey at every game.
- Games consist of two 25-minute straight time halves.
- Stop time final two minutes of the game.
- Halftime will be 5-minutes long.
- Overtime will be one 3-minute period, stop time for the last minute.
- Players will foul out on their sixth personal foul.
- Each team gets one 45 second timeout per half. They can not be carried forward.
- Each team will receive one 30-second timeout per overtime period. They can not be carried forward.
- Each team must have a minimum of five players from their listed roster to avoid default.
- Default occurs at exactly 10 minutes past the scheduled tip-off time according to the referees.
